{"id":237,"date":"2021-04-21T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/?page_id=237"},"modified":"2022-12-09T17:35:23","modified_gmt":"2022-12-09T17:35:23","slug":"is-nars-cruelty-free","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/brands\/makeup\/is-nars-cruelty-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Nars Cruelty-Free?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/caringconsumer-is-nars-cruelty-free.jpg\" alt=\"NARS Cool Palette\" class=\"wp-image-260\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nars Cosmetics is a popular skincare and makeup brand, established in 1994 by French makeup artist and photographer Fran\u00e7ois Nars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When considering the question, “is Nars cruelty-free,” we need to establish what makes a company cruelty-free \u2014 and who makes that call (more on that later).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Nars to be cruelty-free:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Nars must not test their ingredients or products on animals<\/li><li>Nars must not permit others to test their products on animals (third-party testing)<\/li><li>Nars must not sell their products in regions where animal testing is required by law, e.g., in mainland China<\/li><li>Nars must not deal with suppliers who test on animals, e.g., Chinese suppliers<\/li><li>Nars must seek accreditation from an independent and reputable cruelty-free vegan organization, e.g., P.E.T.A.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Fran\u00e7ois Nars’ leadership, Nars Cosmetics was one of the best cruelty-free beauty brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the Nars brand grew rapidly due to heavily advertising their cruelty-free policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, on Nars Cosmetics\u2019 purchase by the beauty conglomerate Shiseido Co. Ltd things at Nars took a turn for the worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/caringconsumer-nars-cosmetics-purchase-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"is nars cruelty free?. Do they test on animals, and is doing so required by law?\" class=\"wp-image-238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/caringconsumer-nars-cosmetics-purchase-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/caringconsumer-nars-cosmetics-purchase-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/caringconsumer-nars-cosmetics-purchase-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/caringconsumer-nars-cosmetics-purchase.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shiseido \u2014 the Parent Company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shiseido Co., Ltd. \u2014 a Japanese company founded in 1872 \u2014 bought Nars in 2000 and maintained Nars’ stellar anti-animal testing reputation until 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much to Nars’ social media followers’ chagrin, in the summer of 2017, Shiseido officially changed Nars’ cruelty-free policy to tap into the lucrative Chinese market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With its massive population and booming cosmetics market, China was too huge an opportunity for Nars to miss out on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, due to their heartbreaking summer decision to start testing on animals, Shiseido \u2014 Nars’ parent company \u2014 was granted permission to sell in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nars’ Instagram statement on their animal testing policy (seen below) makes their position very clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BV2Qf8MjIi3\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"13\" style=\" background:#FFF; is not cruelty-free.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because China’s animal testing law makes it compulsory for all foreign cosmetic brands to submit their products for tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, all foreign cosmetic companies are required by law to submit their products to Chinese third parties, who conduct outdated and cruel tests on animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all fairness to Nars, this means that all beauty brands that sell in mainland China aren’t cruelty-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re sad to say that \u2014 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchandmarkets.com\/research\/swgcx3\/asiapacific?w=4\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Research and Markets<\/a> 2019 report projecting a USD $88.14 billion growth in Asia-Pacific’s cosmeceutical market by 2024 \u2014 the proverbial cosmetics “gold rush” has only just begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, the E.U. still has an outright <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/growth\/sectors\/cosmetics\/animal-testing_en\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"rank-math-link\">ban<\/a> on animal testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cruelty-Free vs. Vegan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a reasonable amount of overlap between cruelty-free and vegan products, considering accreditation standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It isn’t easy to discuss one without reflecting on the other. After all, to be vegan is to avoid animal products and, as a result, to be cruelty-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that said, some cruelty-free vegan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byrdie.com\/natural-vs-organic-beauty-products\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"rank-math-link\">cosmetic<\/a> alternatives pose a whole new set of concerns for consumers. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Is the use of harmful synthetic ingredients, e.g., Dimethicone (a polymer) \u2014 the solution to cruel testing methods?<\/li><li>Is using plant-based oils sourced from endangered ecosystems, e.g., palm oil, better than synthetic ingredients?<\/li><li>Is using a “naturally” occurring ingredient, like petroleum, good for the environment and human health?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For peace of mind, adhere to the recommendations made by the certifying agencies below to ensure that your purchases bring about the greatest good.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cruelty-Free and Vegan Cosmetic Company Certifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These six non-profit organizations certify that a company is cruelty-free vegan.
