This means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comfortworld.co.uk\/sustainability\/what-we-need-to-know-about-sustainable-fabrics.html#:~:text=Sustainable%20clothing%20materials%20refer%20to,just%20how%20sustainable%20they%20are.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using fewer resources<\/a> by minimizing the amount of water, plants, trees, and other natural materials necessary to their production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best sustainable farms don\u2019t use harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another benchmark for sustainability is a fabric\u2019s manufacturing process. The raw materials used in eco-friendly fabrics are natural and completely biodegradable, so no toxic waste makes its way into soil, water, or the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change, deforestation, industrial plastic pollution, water and energy waste, and other environmental damage seem too overwhelming to many people. Tackling them may appear impossible, but easy, practical changes\u2014like switching to sustainable fabrics and clothing\u2014can make a bigger difference than you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable textiles come with none of the baggage of traditionally produced fibers. They address environmental and ethical concerns in a handful of meaningful ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"saving-natural-resources\"><\/span>Saving natural resources<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The EPA estimates that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling\/textiles-material-specific-data#:~:text=The%20recycling%20rate%20for%20all,the%20American%20Textile%20Recycling%20Service.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only 14.7%<\/a> of all textiles are recycled every year, and less than 1% of clothing materials are recycled and used to produce more clothes. The sad truth is that 87% of clothing material is either sent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenbiz.com\/article\/fashions-latest-trend-why-hm-other-big-brands-are-investing-garment-recycling#:~:text=Worldwide%2C%2087%20percent%20of%20material,recycled%20to%20produce%20new%20clothing.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">landfills or incinerated,<\/a> neither of which is good for the environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The low volume of recycled fabric used in the fashion industry means the need for more natural resources to produce more clothing, which just gets thrown out and ends up in landfills, and even more resources are needed to replace those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Water is another natural resource used and wasted by the fashion industry. It takes approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonobjective.co\/article\/the-issues-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2,500 liters of water<\/a> to make just one shirt with conventional cotton, for example. A simple switch to organic cotton\u2014as many sustainable brands have done\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonobjective.co\/article\/the-issues-water#:~:text=Sourcing%20cotton%20from%20certified%20sustainable,compared%20to%20conventional%20cotton%2013.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduces water use by 91%<\/a>. Sustainable brands also avoid dyeing their textiles, one of the thirstier parts of the conventional production process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Countless resources, including trees, plants, plastics, crude oil, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconsciouschallenge.org\/ecologicalfootprintbibleoverview\/clothing-energy#:~:text=More%20than%2060%20per%20cent%20of%20textiles%20are%20used%20in,the%20footprint%20of%20each%20garment.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coal<\/a> are used to fuel this never-ending cycle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable fabrics relieve the pressure on virgin resources because they need fewer raw materials. Some are made from recycled materials, eliminating mining and similar harmful techniques, while other fabrics use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadrunnerwm.com\/blog\/what-does-it-mean-to-close-the-loop#:~:text=By%20definition%2C%20closed%2Dloop%20recycling,products%20retain%20their%20value%20indefinitely.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed-loop production system<\/a> to capture and reuse water in development. For example, over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.econyl.com\/the-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70,000 barrels<\/a> of crude oil are saved per year in the production process of swimwear when made with the more sustainable ECONYL rather than new nylon yarn, which is made from petroleum-based plastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"reducing-waste\"><\/span>Reducing waste<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling\/textiles-material-specific-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whopping 7.7%<\/a> of all municipal solid waste is clothing. In fact, post-consumer waste is one of the largest environmental challenges associated with fast fashion. Waste fabric takes up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadrunnerwm.com\/blog\/textile-waste-environmental-crisis#:~:text=And%20when%20consumers%20throw%20away,the%20groundwater%20and%20our%20soil.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 years to decompose<\/a>, during which time it releases toxic chemicals and dyes into the soil and generates greenhouse gases as it decomposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable fabrics are made to last longer, so fewer garments will end up in the trash. Some sustainable fabrics are made from recycled materials, including plastic, fish nets, and other fabrics. These recycled fabrics keep more waste out of landfills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"eliminating-toxic-chemicals\"><\/span>Eliminating toxic chemicals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Synthetic and unsustainable fabrics include multiple chemicals, such as formaldehyde, lead, and even mercury. These leach into marine environments and soil, <a href=\"https:\/\/fashinza.com\/textile\/sustainability\/how-sustainability-affects-the-chemicals-used-in-textiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">damaging everything<\/a> they come into contact with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable fabrics avoid their use in several ways, such as using organic and sustainable dyeing alternatives or skipping the dye entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"reducing-your-carbon-footprint\"><\/span>Reducing your carbon footprint<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The global fashion industry was responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/retail\/our-insights\/fashion-on-climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.1 billion metric tons<\/a> of greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 alone, about 4% of total emissions that year. Some estimates even go as far as to claim fast fashion contributed <a href=\"https:\/\/gasp-pgh.org\/2020\/07\/28\/clothes-climate-change-how-a-fashion-choice-change-could-lead-to-better-air-quality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10% of global emissions<\/a>. That equates to the same greenhouse gas emissions as the United Kingdom, France, and Germany combined. The primary culprits of these emissions are virgin polyester, nylon, and acrylic, each of which is made from fossil fuels, including petroleum, and manufactured in plants powered by coal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An eco-friendly fabric cuts out many of the chemicals and energy needed to make a synthetic fiber. A natural fiber will be easier on the environment and has nowhere near the carbon footprint of fast fashion materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"saving-animal-lives\"><\/span>Saving animal lives<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While it might not really be news to you, especially if you\u2019re reading this article, the fashion industry kills animals. <a href=\"https:\/\/caring-consumer.com\/products\/clothing\/fabrics\/leather\/\">Leather<\/a> is one of the leaders in this, and the belief that the material is simply a by-product of the meat industry doesn\u2019t hold water. The production of leather slaughters an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2016\/mar\/13\/is-it-time-to-give-up-leather-animal-welfare-ethical-lucy-siegle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">430 million animals<\/a> every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s not just cows. The fashion industry exploits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-clothing\/animals-used-skins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many animals<\/a> in its quest for high quarterly profits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Silkworms to make silk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Goats to make cashmere<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sheep to make wool and shearling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lambs to make karakul lamb fur<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camels and llamas to make vicu\u00f1a<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tibetan antelope to make shahtoosh<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-clothing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">These animals are treated horrendously<\/a> before eventually being brutally slaughtered.
